Dear Parents/Carers

We can hardly believe that we have reached the end of the penultimate half term of the year already! Time has certainly flown by, and although this half term has felt slightly quieter on the surface, there has still been plenty going on across the school.

Our children have continued to enjoy enriching experiences including Year 1’s walk to Bucklers Park, Year 2’s visit from Natural England, Celebration of Learning and a wonderful Willow Class Assembly that showcased their hard work and confidence. Moments such as these remind us how much the children continue to grow, both academically and personally.

This half term has very much felt like the calm before a busy and exciting final stretch of the summer term. When we return, the school calendar quickly fills with a wide range of events and opportunities. The children can look forward to their summer trips, which always provide memorable learning experiences beyond the classroom, and our much-anticipated Sports Day, where teamwork and perseverance shine through. We will also begin our transition mornings, helping children prepare confidently for the next stage of their Oaklands journey, while welcoming our newest members of the school community through our stay and play sessions for new starters.

Thank you, as always, for your continued support, particularly following our recent reading and behaviour letter – it really does make a difference! We will continue to promote respect and marvellous manners, like Goldie, and encourage children to look after each other and the school, like Casey.

We wish you all a restful half term break and look forward to the final half of the summer term.

Best wishes,

Miss Davies and Mrs Shrieve

Character Leaf Award

This term our focus for the school character is Laurie.

In the first Olympics in Greece, the winner needed to have a crown to wear.  They couldn’t use gold or silver so they chose laurel. Laurie was very proud to be used to make the first wreath that was worn on the heads of the winners.

Parent Representatives

We would like to say a big thank you to our new Parent Representatives. We had a really valuable first meeting and appreciated the useful and insightful feedback shared. We look forward to continuing to work together and strengthening the relationship between school and parents. Our next meeting will be held at 9:00am on Friday 19th June.

Foundation

It has been a fairly short but very busy half term.  We have been enjoying learning about Minibeasts and found so many types when we investigated different habitats around the school grounds.  The children have produced some lovely Minibeast artwork.  We have listened to lots of stories and information books and even created our own “Who am I?” booklets.  We have looked at the lifecycles of caterpillars and frogs.  For the past two weeks we have been learning about Birds.  Both classes have been bird spotting and listening to birdsong.  We heard and saw so many birds including Red Kites, Crows, Magpies, Blackbirds and Robins!  We even had a Robin nest in our Foundation Stage outside area and saw the baby chicks fledge.  All of this has made us very excited for our upcoming trip to Bird World after the half term break!  This last week has also been Aspirations Week.  We have enjoyed looking at different jobs and role models.  It was great dressing up in clothes to show what we would like to be when we grow up.  Overall, we have been having a great time and learned so much!

Year 1

Year 1 have squeezed a lot into this half term. As part of our And It Grew topic we planted nasturtiums before the Easter holiday and have watched them grow each week with mixed results. Have a look outside our classrooms, we are still waiting for the flowers so we will continue to water them. We had a fantastic visit to Bucklers Park to look at the trees and plants as well as the change of use of the land. We had fun improving our sports day skills and are hoping for a dry day on the 3rd June. If you have a bat, ball or skipping rope have a go in your garden or at the park. In maths we have been using cubes to measure length and height and also in balances to find the mass of different classroom objects. If you are cooking over the holidays follow the recipe and measure the ingredients together. You may be inspired by the book ‘Olivers vegetables. Can you measure the length or height of small items at home using centimetres? The Tiny Seed by Eric Carle inspired our art. Our splattered backgrounds were in the style of Jackson Pollock and the petals and leaves used the painting and collage techniques Eric Carle used.

Year 2

What a busy half term Year 2 have had!

We have learnt about two significant women in History (Rosa Parks and Emily Davison) who stood up for what they believed in and helped to bring about equality and a change in society. To enhance their learning, the children have also been giving talks and presentations to their classes explaining who they are inspired by and why. We have loved listening to the talks, learning about such a variety of different people and everyone did an amazing job presenting and answering questions.

Sports Day

Please see the programme of events below for sports day.

Aspirations Week

Thank you to all of the speakers who kindly volunteered their time to take part in our Aspirations Week assemblies and class talks. The children really enjoyed learning about a wide range of professions, and we hope it has inspired them to think about their own futures.

A big well done also to all of the children for dressing up as what they would like to be when they grow up and thank you to the parents and carers who supported with this. It was lovely to see such a great variety of costumes across the school, and their enthusiasm made the week even more special.

Staff Goodbyes

As you already know, we are sadly saying goodbye to two of our superhero TA’s Mrs Rozycka and Mrs Plonka. We wish them both good luck on their exciting new adventures. We are grateful for all they have done over the years to support and care for the children – they will be sorely missed by the Oaklands family!

Knowledge Organisers

The Summer 1 knowledge organisers are available to you on the learning pages of the website.  This is so you can clearly understand what your child has learnt this half term and a good way for you to review and revise their learning. Regular retrieval of knowledge helps us remember more effectively and helps the children have a deeper understanding over time.
