The DFE have issued a statutory framework that is due to come into effect on 1st September 2026. This framework sets out the legal duties with which schools must comply when teaching relationships, sex education (RSE) and health education. The updated guidance aims to provide more comprehensive, age-appropriate education that better prepares young people for modern life, relationships, and health challenges.

Our school uses Jigsaw, the mindful approach to PSHE, which also includes all the statutory RSE content The content is taught through six themed units (called “Puzzles”) across the year. All content is age-appropriate – what a child learns in Foundation Stage is very different from what a child learns in Year 6.

During each year, each class covers:

Term 1: Being Me in My World

Term 2: Celebrating Difference (including anti-bullying)

Term 3: Dreams and Goals

Term 4: Healthy Me

Term 5: Relationships

Term 6: Changing Me

The whole school works on the same Puzzle at the same time, meaning that each Puzzle can be launched with a whole-school assembly and learning can be celebrated by the whole school in a meaningful way.

You can view a summary of the content that will be taught through the Jigsaw scheme and an example of a pupil knowledge organiser aged 5 to 6 from the Relationships Puzzle below.
